Happy to work

Prior to our economic nose five, many people were unhappy with their jobs. Jobs were plentiful and individuals had the option to choose a job they preferred. Because of the soaring unemployment rate, positions a scarce. It has gotten to the point that people who once held executive positions are now willing to work at any pay.

Unemployment benefits vary

Unemployment benefits vary by state, but the typical state-mandated maximum length of unemployment benefits is around 26 weeks, and the ratio of benefits to earnings (the replacement rate) varies between one third and one half of earnings. The standard model of the aggregate labor market is based on the idea that, because it takes time for a worker to find the right job and time for a firm to find the right worker, the economy will have some positive rate of unemployment regardless of how well the economy is performing. Search is productive. In the basic version of the model, unemployment benefits raise workers' reservation wages (the minimum they are willing to accept to take a job), and hence the wages of employed workers. As a result firms have less incentive to open vacancies and unemployment increases. In particular the ratio of unemployed workers to job openings will increase.

The housing crash continues. Though there are bright spots, giving us hope that the housing market is on the rise. The truth of the matter that overall, the outlook is still bleak. Many great deals can be found for housing (if you have a job, and if you can get a loan). Houses that were considered over-priced are now selling at a fraction of their value. Rental prices have gone down. For the unfortunate ones that are going through the foreclosure process, there are sources to help you.

Home builders that construct neighborhoods have an inventory of houses that need to be sold. Banks that once held the note to your mortgage are now trying to deal with the ever growing amount of homes that have been foreclosed on. Construction, for the most part, has slowed considerably. Existing projects are looking for financing from other countries to keep from defaulting. The slowing construction trend can be seen in every major city from coast to coast.

Analysts say that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The journey to the end of the tunnel is hard part. Once we reach the light, what dilemmas will we face then?

Have you lost your job? Are you standing in line with literally dozens of people applying for unemployment benefits? It’s pointless to say that your situation is not uncommon. Government data last week showed that employers cut another 467000 jobs in June and the US unemployment rate hit 9.5 percent, its highest since August 1983.

With almost ½ million jobs gone, the financial stress on the individual and families, is mind-boggling. The burden on our government to help support our fellow citizens are just about breaking at the seams. The number unemployment insurance claims are still on the rise. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the new name for the federal Food Stamp Program as of Oct. 1, 2008. Is the government attempting to breathe new life into an old program? Food banks are serving more and more people in need.

In these hard economic times, we have to pull together and help each other anyway we can. We hear or even know of people who open their homes and their hearts to those who no longer have a home. The barter system is used throughout the country. People who once shopped in the malls are content to shopping at thrift stores. Prices of goods and services have down in some cases and up in others. We eat out less, go to the movies less, and travel less.

It doesn’t matter why or how this all happened anymore. The focus should be on solving this dilemma. Too many fingers are pointing. People are playing the ‘Blame Game’. This is unproductive. Our energies should be used to find our way out. How many of us complain about our situation instead of improving it?

Jobs are out there. It may not be a position you see yourself in permanently. We need to ‘Just Get By’ until the storm is over. This blog is to help you find a job. The resources found here are intended for you. Make the best of them.
